We have had two houses broken into the past few days. Please keep an eye out and pass along the word to your neighbors who might not have internet access. At this time there is not enough interest in a neighborhood watch program. If you see anything suspicious please call 911 immediately. The first house was an attempted break in. They tried to kick in the front door approximately 9:30 - 11:00 am. The second house is on Briargate time unknown.

Please specify on which street(s) the break-ins took place. Thank you.

How are they breaking in? I want to know so I can see what I need to do to beef up my home security.
Thanks,

I would be particularly interested to know the time of day the break-ins occured and whether anyone was home during the time.

Please provide street (don’t need actual address), time of day, and how did they entered the property. THAT WOULD HELP ALL OF US.

Both front door kickin style.
Haverford on Thanksgiving. Estimated at around 10AM. Failed due to alarm and reinforced jamb, though door nearly failed. No one home.
Briargate - reported a few days later. Success on entry. Jamb was reinforced but door failed. Minor quick grab theft. No one home. Likely daytime too.
The metal doors the builders used seem to open up easy unless they too are reinforced.
Both jamb and door edges need reinforcing or kickin method is too easy.

Just had a roving band of door-to-door sales people come through. Are they scoping the neighborhood? I did see a police car on Briargate talking to a couple of them.

at http://www.krimelabb.com you can search all the Austin police calls by zipcode
crime for our neighborhood is pretty low
the best thing you can do is to know your neighbor and watch out for strange vehicles and people who don’t live in the area
and call the police

I work in the state crime lab, and although I don’t really work with burglaries, I do know more than others about crime. Actually, there are some minor things that everyone could be doing to help protect themselves. Here is what I do and recommend:
1. Park your cars in your garage. I always park our vehicles in the garage and therefore burglars do not know when I’m home or not home. My neighbor left her car in the driveway all day long and the time she was burglarized was when her car wasn’t parked there that day. Plus, the majority of burglaries we are hit with are burglary of vehicles!
2. Leave some lights on when you leave. I see a lot of dark houses. And, motion detector flood lights on the front of the house are a great idea.
3. Keep your exposed windows shaded or draped. It amazes me how many blinds I see open. Burglars will walk through neighborhoods and be able to see exactly where the computer, dvd player, tv is, etc. Then when you’re gone, they can break in and out quickly because they knew where the good stuff was located! And, I know it’s beautiful to display your Christmas tree, but you’re showing them what window to break into to grab hundreds of dollars worth of gifts.
4. Solicitors can also see inside your home. Never open your door all the way to strangers. I usually don’t answer the door to solicitors, but if I do, I open it a crack and usually remind them about the “no soliciting” sign at the entrance to the neighborhood. And, never, ever invite them in. They’ll take a mental picture of every item in your house.
5. Leave a radio on during the day. A house won’t immediately appear empty if there is some sort of noise/vibration coming out of it.
6. Get an alarm system. I pay only $15 a month for my monitoring system. Plus, the insurance deduction I get pays for about 6 months worth. But, if you don’t want to pay for the service, the system itself will still go off and draw attention to a break-in (it just won’t notify the police).
7. Interviews with burglars have shown that their number one deterrent is a dog. Not an aggressive, scary dog, but a dog that makes noise and draws attention (so little and yappy is fine). I would never tell someone to get a dog simply for this reason, because I feel that many pets are under-cared for. But, if you’re on the fence on getting a dog, here’s another good reason.
8. Finally, plan for the possibility of a break-in. My husband is an insurance agent so we have good coverage (including fraud protection if paperwork is stolen). And, we take pictures of every valuable in our house and put that picture, the make, model, and serial number on a dvd. We have one copy at home, one at my work, and one at his work. This helps you retrieve your items from pawn shops and helps alleviate any arguments with the insurance company about the replacements.
I really hope some of this is helpful.

DUES INCREASE? Weird, I can’t respond in the DUE increase post so I’ll have to do it here. Sounds like a president without much POWER. Due increase, is money out of my pocket!
AND LATE fee is a little high isn’t it.

That is pretty odd that you took off the comment section of the dues increase. You can do that to the website, but not update everything else that needs to be desperately updated? This website is an absolute joke. The old fee is still on it, newsletters from 2005, and announcements that are now meaningless. If we can spend 50K on a playground, we can spend a little bit of money each month paying someone to keep the website updated.
But, what really gets me is that there are absolutely NO meeting minutes since 2008. I could have sworn in the “Board member sweep of 2008″ that you guys promised to be more transparent. Meeting minutes are an absolute must. And, Dwayne, instead of you venting unnecessary posts on these comment sections, the minutes could spell out what was voted upon and each member’s vote. That’s transparency. I’m not understanding all sides very well when it’s just board members bickering back and forth on these comment sections like we’re back in junior high.
